Facebook inbox management
Updated over a week ago

There are different ways to reply to your Facebook messages and comments, along with some limitations to keep in mind. Learn more, below.

For more details on actions that can be taken in the Inbox, check out our General Inbox Management article.

Replying to comments

Click on the item that you want to reply to and type a reply into the provided field. You can add emojis, pictures/videos, or choose among any saved replies. Don't forget to hit Send when done!

When adding a picture or a video to the reply, you add one at a time. You can remove and/or replace it anytime before sending it. The file size limit for the attached image file is 4 Mb, while for the video file, it's 10 Mb.

To reply via PM, just click on the dropdown menu and select Reply in PM.

Note:

  • Be aware you can reply to given comment in private once only - as soon as you have sent PM as a reply to a comment, it is not possible to sent another one. You can still reply the "standard" way, of course.

  • Also, you can reply privately to a comment only up to 7 days since you receive it - after 7 days this won't be possible (Facebook policy).

If you handle comments through Agorapulse and also directly on Facebook, they will not be marked as reviewed on Agorapulse, even if they have been reviewed on Facebook. We technically do not get any information that the comment has already been reviewed from Facebook.

Messages

To reply to a private message, click on the PM in the Inbox and type in the reply in the provided field. You can add an emoji or use saved replies. Again, don't forget to hit Send when done!

You can include different types of attachments:

  • image files (standard formats are supported: JPEG, PNG, GIF; max 25 Mb file size)

  • MP4 and MOV files (max file size 30Mb)

If you reply to a Facebook private message using Agorapulse, the message will not be marked as read on Facebook. We're technically not able to mark it as read - long story short, there's no permission in the current Facebook API that would allow us to do that. We only have 'read-only' access.

So, for now, even if you reply to a private message, it'll remain unread on Facebook.

Replying to comments with a private message

You can also reply to a Facebook comment with a private message (PM). When viewing a comment in the Inbox, you have the ability to reply with a comment (the "standard" way) or you can send user a message - you just need to select Reply in PM option:

I can't reply in a private message, why?

There are few restrictions regarding the ability to reply in private message (PM) on Facebook. We list them below:

  • private replies to posts or comments are allowed within 7 days of the creation date of the user post or comment

  • you can only reply in PM to given comment or post once

  • you can only reply in PM to posts or comments

I can't open Facebook private messages directly on Facebook, why?

If you want to open Facebook private message (PM) directly on Facebook via the View on Facebook button, shown below:

But you face this error...

... you're most likely using Meta Business Manager to manage your Facebook Page. You need to go to Business Manager - Business Settings - Business Info and make sure the setting shown below is enabled (ON):
