How to add audio to Instagram Reels

Learn how to add audio to your Instagram Reels

Adding audio to an Instagram Reel lets you set the tone of your content, follow trends, and increase engagement. Previously, this was not possible due to API limitations from Instagram. However, Instagram has now made adding audio to Instagram Reels available via its API for third-party applications, allowing you to search for audio, attach it to your Reel, and publish it, all from the Publishing Composer in Agorapulse.

In this article, we will cover:

Please note: This feature is available on all current PPU plans. If you are on one of our legacy plans and would like to upgrade, feel free to reach out to our Support team here.

How to add audio to an Instagram Reel

You can add audio while creating your Reel in the Publishing Composer. Audio can only be attached to the Reel post type.

To add audio to a Reel:

  1. Open the Publishing Composer

  2. Select an Instagram profile and add your video content

  3. Navigate to the Instagram options panel and set the Post type to Reel

  4. Under the Audio on Reels section, click Add audio

  5. In the pop-up, you can search for tracks via the search bar or in the three following tabs:

    • All (default): Shows all available tracks

    • Music: Shows royalty-free music from Meta's Sound Collection

    • Original audio: Shows user-generated sounds from existing Reels
Note: You cannot preview your Reel with the attached sound inside Agorapulse. To preview a track before publishing, click the Listen on Instagram icon next to the audio track.

  6. Select a track, then click Add audio

Once you have added the audio to your Reel, the selected track's name and composer will be shown under Audio on Reels, and in the published post view once the Reel is published.

Please note: You can adjust the balance between the Audio and Video volume using the Volume slider.

How to edit or remove the audio

After you save a track, you can change it or remove it before publishing.

To edit or remove the audio:

  1. In the Audio on Reels section, click the three dots (...) next to the selected track.

  2. Select one of the following:

    • Edit audio: Opens the Add audio window allowing you to choose a different track

    • Remove audio: Removes the track from your Reel.

Instagram audio limitations

The following limitations apply due to how Instagram provides audio through its API:

  • You cannot trim a track to a specific part. The sound is added from the start of the track.

  • Audio can be added to Reels only. Images, Carousels, and Stories are not supported.

  • The available catalog may be more limited than the one in the native Instagram app, because only sounds authorized for third-party use are returned. You may not find all of the audio tracks that appear in the Instagram app.
