How to manage Instagram Direct Messages (DMs) and Story mentions

Agorapulse allows you to manage Instagram Direct Messages. This article described the steps to ensure that you can receive Instagram Direct Messages (DMs) and Story mentions in Agorapulse.

Enable Instagram Direct Messages (DMs) & Story mentions

Messages are usually enabled for you automatically, however, if you find you are not receiving Instagram DMs, it is worth following the steps shown below in this article.

In order to proceed please make sure that:

  • you're an Agorapulse Admin (of the Instagram Professional profile) - learn more about roles here

  • you're logged in to the Instagram Professional account on your mobile​

Allow access to Messages in the Instagram app

First you will need to ensure that the setting is enabled in the Instagram Mobile app. Open the Instagram app and follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Instagram professional account

  2. Click the 3 bars in the top right of the screen to access the Settings and activity menu

  3. Scroll down and Messages and story replies

  4. Then select Message controls

  5. and finally toggle on Allow access to messages

Please note that if you change or remove the Facebook Page that is linked to the Instagram account in question, the Allow Access to messages option might be disabled automatically. In such a case, you'll need to enable it again.

Note: Repeat for each Instagram Professional account you’d like to activate the Instagram DMs on.

Renew authorizations

If you enable the setting above in Instagram and your DMs are still not appearing in Agorapulse, you will need to update your permissions.

The easiest way to make sure you granted us the permissions is to reconnect with your Facebook profile and accept the permissions requested. This will simply renew your token which is necessary for us to retrieve the DMs.

In order to do so, please go to your Organization settings > Social profiles and then filter to Instagram.

Then, click on the Refresh Instagram token button in order to trigger the Facebook Connect modal.

If you are presented with a Facebook window requesting permissions, please accept this by clicking Continue.

Do not change the permissions requested since this might prevent Agorapulse from working as expected. We are only asking for the permissions we need to get Instagram DMs working.

Note: Make sure you are connected to the right Facebook account to renew your Instagram accounts.

If your Instagram accounts are not all linked to the same Facebook account, this will only partially renew the tokens. You’ll have to repeat this procedure with another Facebook account until you accept these permissions for all your Instagram Business profiles.


Disable Instagram Direct Messages (DM) & Story mentions

If you no longer want to see your Instagram Direct Messages (DM) and Story mentions in your Agorapulse Inbox, you can disable the sync of these items.

This action must be done in the Instagram mobile app. You'll need to disable the Allow access to Messages option. So, open your Instagram app and:

  1. select the Instagram Professional (Business/Creator) account

  2. tap Settings and privacy

  3. then Messages and story replies

  4. then Message controls

  5. and finally toggle off Allow access to Messages

You'll need to disable access to messages for each Instagram account that you wish to disable DMs for separately.

Once these steps are complete, Agorapulse will stop syncing Direct Messages & Story mentions in your Inbox. This will not delete any messages. New messages will no longer appear in Agorapulse.
